The ship's bell from Donau

The bells ring

On the night of 26 November 1942, Norwegian police led 529 Jewish children and adults on board the SS Donau, which was moored at Pier 1 in Oslo Harbour. At 2:55 p.m., the ship set course for Stettin in Nazi Germany (now Szczecin in Poland). From there, the prisoners were transferred to transport wagons and taken to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Did the captives guess what awaited them? Did they hear the bell ring when the ship arrived at Stettin?

Only nine of the 529 people survived the concentration camp.
