Fifty years ago, these oil rigs sat alongside what is now Aker Brygge promenade. This spot was home to a huge shipyard: Akers Mechanical Works.
The face of the fjord
Akers Mechanical Works had been here since 1854. There is no doubt that the shipyard provided Oslo a visible face towards the fjord and gave the city a distinctive appearance.
The heartbeat of the city
At times, the shipyard employed thousands. The sound of the hammers was like the heartbeat of the city. Huge ships, and in time these oil rigs, were hammered and welded into shape.
