Summer dairy

Many Farms in Eidsvoll had summer dairies. They weren't placed further away from the farmhouse than necessary, as long as the animals had access to new pastures to graze in.

About

Traditionally it was milkmaids who produced cheese, butter, and Norwegian brown cheeses, and the dairy products were collected once a week by the men working back at the main farm.

After WW2 most summer dairies were no longer in use. One of the reasons is that the dairy products which were being made on farms, and had been conveniently produced at the summer pastures, were now being produced at dairy Farms. Regular farmers had been dependant on transporting the fresh milk, something that wasn't as easily done from the summer dairy as it was on a dairy farm.
