Chapter 6

Amundsen's creditors are snapping at his heels as departure approaches. He has run up debts to several people and is under pressure to repay.

On 16 June 1903, Amundsen starts the expedition diary:

"Departed tonight at 12 o’clock from Kristiania..."

Below deck, conditions are cramped, but Amundsen has made space for some people he wants with him on the journey.

On the wall hang several framed photographs, among them portraits of teacher Georg von Neumayer and King Oscar II.

And also the first hero:
Sir John Franklin

The first to locate the North Magnetic Pole:
Sir James Clark Ross

And the prophet:
Fridtjof Nansen

ʺTo Captain Roald Amundsen with wishes of good luck and progress on the journey from his friend Fridtjof Nansen, 16 June 1903.ʺ

Epilogue

Like much else in Roald Amundsen's life, the planning of the journey to the North Magnetic Pole and through the Northwest Passage can be seen as a jigsaw puzzle, whose pieces in this case include supporters, assistants, experts, disputes, decisions, and strokes of luck, both good and bad.

Pieces that in their different ways contributed to both the expedition itself and to the telling of its story afterwards.
